Our First Ujima Collective Work Day

Saturday, April 27th was Mama Moore {Re}Generation Center’s first Ujima Collective Work Day of the year. Ujima is a Swahili principle that recognizes the importance of community coming together to take responsibility for our shared space as we work to address challenges and build toward a collective vision.

In collaboration with a longtime values-based partner, Sweet Water Foundation, our intergenerational team of over 20 community members was able to fill eight garden beds that were constructed by the Mama Moore {Re}Generation Center team earlier this season. These new 4x6 garden beds are an evolution from smaller garden beds in previous years at Mama Moore which will allow us to cultivate a greater abundance of healthy local produce within our neighborhood. Thanks to the care and support of dedicated hands, locally sourced wood chips and organic compost will fuel the plants we will soon be harvesting for our summer markets!

After a rewarding day of collective progress and community connections, we shared a farm-to-table Karamu (unity feast) of vegan artichoke, black bean & mushroom tacos topped with fresh collards, kale, chard, beets, and cilantro grown locally at the Sweet Water Foundation and prepared by the Mama Moore {Re}Generation Center.

As we head into the summer, we are excited to continue to grow, learn, play, work, thrive, and build toward community {re}volution! Look out for more information on our upcoming programming.
